Saleem Khan Gimmi’s Chan Arboun Charrhya : A Critical Study of Seerat Writing in Punjabi Islamic Literature

Abstract

Seerat literature occupies a distinguished position within Islamic literary traditions, reflecting sustained scholarly and devotional engagement with the life and character of the Holly Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Punjabi literature has also contributed significantly to this tradition through works that present the Prophet’s life, teachings, and exemplary character in a form accessible to Punjabi-speaking audiences. This study critically examines Saleem Khan Gimmi’s Chan Arboun Charrhya  as a notable contribution to Punjabi Seerat literature. The research analyzes the work from both scholarly and literary perspectives, with particular attention to Gimmi’s treatment of the life and character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his narrative approach, and the religious and moral dimensions embedded in the text. It further evaluates the position of Chan Arboun Charrhya  within Punjabi Islamic literature and considers the extent to which the work fulfills the established requirements of Seerat writing. Through this critical assessment, the study highlights the significance of Saleem Khan Gimmi’s contribution to the Punjabi literary tradition of representing the Seerat of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). While  also identifying the distinctive literary and devotional qualities of his work.
