A Review of Islamic and Western Concepts of Happiness

Abstract

A comparative study of Western joyful emotions and ways of celebration as compared to Islamic ways of celebration would provide valuable insights into the cultural and religious differences between these two worlds. This research paper would likely explore how Western cultures express joy and celebrate special occasions, such as Christmas, New Year's Eve, and birthdays, often with an emphasis on individualism, materialism, and external displays of happiness ¹. In contrast, Islamic celebrations, such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and other moments of happiness tend to focus on community, spirituality, and inner joy. The paper would also examine the concept of happiness in Western and Islamic philosophies. For instance, Western philosophy often associates happiness with the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain, whereas Islamic philosophy emphasizes the importance of gratitude, contentment, and spiritual growth in achieving true happiness. Furthermore, the research would investigate how these different approaches to joy, happiness and celebration impact individuals' mental health, social relationships, and overall well-being.
